Achillobator

Achillobator giganticus was one of the largest dromaeosaurs ever discovered. It was found in Mongolia and lived around 96 to 89 million years ago during the Late Cretaceous period. It measured over 15 feet long and weighed more than 700 pounds, rivaling the size of other large raptors such as Utahraptor and Austroraptor. Achillobator was robust, with stocky, muscular legs, leading researchers to believe it may have been suited for long-distance running and leaping. It lived in a semi-arid, watered-plains environment with lakes and rivers, and likely hunted by leaping onto its prey and pinning it with its sickle-shaped raptor claws.

Habitat: Can be found nesting anywhere in Riparia and Gondwa. Suggested areas are

Active Times: Diurnal, with activity starting at dawn and ending at dusk.

Grouping: Because Achillobator may travel with their Flamekin partners, all groups, whether made up entirely of Achillobator or including Flamekin, are capped at six individuals. Achillobator are not permitted to mixpack with any raptors outside of their established Flamekin bonds.

Behavior

Achillobator is a large raptor that is highly intelligent and keenly aware of its surroundings. They are well-adapted, long-distance runners that usually travel alone or in pairs. They are powerful predators that are aggressive by nature, and they use their finely tuned senses to track down their preferred prey. They are nomadic and are also seen traveling with smaller raptors. This behavior can form a relationship known as a Flamekin bond.

Achillobator migrates eastward during winter to biomes with rocky terrain and caves, where they nest in spring. Males search for and follow females until the females are ready to nest, and during this time, the females aggressively defend their personal space. A female will allow the following male to trail behind her at a distance, and she will intentionally cross the paths of other males to provoke a fight and judge each male’s fitness.

When a female is ready to nest, she selects a nest site and finally allows the male to approach. He will only be tolerated for a short time, as the female needs him primarily to help build the nest and protect it while she incubates her brood. After all 5 of her chicks have hatched, she becomes extremely protective and will force the male out of the territory if he does not leave willingly.

Nesting and offspring Behavior

Achillobator chicks are born aggressive. As soon as they hatch, they begin snapping and nipping at one another to establish the order in which they will access resources. This pecking order is fluid and changes as each chick learns new skills and gains confidence. The most dominant chick eats first and stands closest to its mother, while the weakest takes the most submissive role and may miss out on meals if it does not fight for them.

As the chicks approach adolescence, the Achillobator family, consisting of no more than 6 individuals, begins its migration to the mother’s chosen hunting grounds. These locations are typically areas where herbivore herds gather from summer through winter, and it is there that the mother teaches her young to hunt their preferred prey.

Chicks may remain with their mother for up to 2 years (8 seasons), often well into adulthood, before dispersing. However, the longer they stay, the more dangerous life becomes, as lone males searching for a mate may attempt to kill the offspring to ensure the female will hatch their brood the following spring.

Despite their innate aggression, Achillobator understands one thing very well: power multiplies in groups. While they rarely form Flamekin bonds with larger predators, they frequently team up with smaller raptors, especially during the breeding season, to create mixed hunting bands known as mobs.

A typical mob consists of one or two Achillobator accompanied by up to four smaller raptors, such as Deinonychus or Latenivenatrix. These groups are fast and chaotic, yet surprisingly coordinated.

Mobs can form when females, unsuccessful in the breeding season, encounter smaller raptors and instinctively begin caring for them as if they were her own. Females have been observed tailing small raptors with chunks of meat, guiding them to fresh water, and providing for them until a bond forms. This behavior is also seen in pairs of Achillobator, resulting in chaotic but tight-knit mob “families.”

Another common pathway arises from the behavior of lone males recently driven from nesting territories by fiercely protective females. With no immediate access to mates and an increased need for security, these males roam widely and become unusually sociable, gravitating toward groups of smaller dromaeosaurs. Initial encounters are cautious, but the male integrates quickly by sharing food or offering protection, and the smaller raptors benefit from his imposing size and ability to confront larger predators.

These interactions solidify into short-lived but highly effective mobs that persist until the male regains condition, secures new territory, or reenters the breeding cycle.

Achillobator mothers are renowned for their fierce protectiveness toward their young. Once her brood hatches, a female’s behavior transforms dramatically. Her vigilance intensifies, and she responds to perceived threats with explosive, unwavering aggression. Observers often compare this defensive intensity to that of modern brown bears, which will confront and drive off predators far larger than themselves to safeguard their offspring.

During this period, the mother maintains a wide perimeter around the nest or temporary den site, aggressively challenging anything that enters it, whether a rival raptor, an opportunistic scavenger, or a much larger carnivore. This defensive strategy ensures that even apex predators view an Achillobator nursery with caution.

As the chicks grow and the family begins moving between feeding grounds, the mother’s protective instincts remain heightened. She frequently positions herself between her brood and any potential danger, guiding them through terrain that offers clear escape routes or defensible positions. Her willingness to confront threats head-on, combined with her sharp awareness of her surroundings, is a crucial factor in the high survival rate of Achillobator offspring during their early development.

Studies suggest that their sensory acuity is directly tied to these roaming behaviors. Achillobator sometimes spends time sunbathing. They seek open clearings or exposed ridgelines to warm their feathers and restore core temperature after long journeys or cool mornings. Even while basking, individuals remain alert, using elevated vantage points and subtle scanning to watch for threats. Sunbathing also has social aspects. Paired or mob-forming Achillobator may gather near one another, reinforcing bonds while enjoying brief periods of calm and warmth.
