Bristlewing

The Bristlewing is a large, ferocious wyvern that is adapted to survive within volatile volcanic environments. Weighing over 2 tons, this heavy-set carnivore combines raw power with surprising agility. Using its broad, eagle-like wings, it navigates the updrafts of its scorching habitat. Its body is armored in razor-sharp scales and spikes, serving as both a deterrent to rivals and protection from struggling prey. These wyverns deploy their fire breath to subdue their prey, challenge competitors, and defend their territories, solidifying their position as formidable predators.

Behavior

The Bristlewing is a home-ranging wyvern that migrates seasonally, hunting alongside tightly knit family packs consisting of relatives from multiple generations. They tend to target prey of equal or larger size, using their aerial agility to pursue them, or stealth and concealment to ambush unsuspecting victims. They are highly territorial and protective of their young, and fight with relentless, unmatched fury.

Unrelated family packs tend to avoid each other unless prey or resources become scarce. When encounters do occur, they may clash violently. These brutal engagements can be fought over territory, carcasses, or prey, and end when no more than two Bristlewings from either side are killed. Once a family member has fallen, their packmates will aggressively contest its corpse (kill claim rules apply) to consume it themselves. Bristlewing do not discriminate when it comes to meat, as their hunger demands and growing young put immense pressure on them to continuously seek sustenance.

While they do not tolerate rival aerial predators, Bristlewings harbor a specialized hatred for the Dominus, a colossal fire-breathing titan that preys on other dragons. Dominus are a direct threat to Bristlewing hatchlings as well as competition for prey and resources. Once sighted, a family pack may erupt into a frenzy of attacks, dive-bombs, and vocalizations, continuing until the Dominus vacates the area or dies from the onslaught.

The most favored prey of the Bristlewing is the Skyshroud Drakara. Light-bodied and ill-suited for prolonged combat, the Drakara is no match for a Bristlewing’s bone-crushing bites or its fire breath. Bristlewings are not as quick in the air, however, and so it pursues for long distances across the sky, biding its time until its prey depletes its stamina. It is relentless in its hunt, and will only yield when it has lost sight of the Drakara entirely.

Solitary Behavior

Solitary Bristlewings, whether outcast or self-exiled, adopt different strategies for survival. Relying on stealth and dense cover, they lie in wait along cliff ledges and within thick underbrush for opportunities to strike. These wyverns ambush unsuspecting prey with deadly dive bombs and fire blasts. Solitary individuals are known to be wild and dangerously aggressive, and may even isolate and prey on other Bristlewing.

When encountering a Dominus, a solitary Bristlewing will readily form uneasy alliances with the Dracoviper, using their agility and venom to bleed a Dominus dry before swooping in to claim the kill. A solitary Bristlewing may not group with a Dracoviper unless cooperatively hunting a Dominus. Only one Bristlewing may group with a maximum of two Dracovipers, and they must group prior to initiating combat. If the Dominus breaks LOS for longer than 5 minutes, the group must disperse.

This does not ensure the Dracovipers’ safety, however, because should the hunt on the Dominus fail, the lone Bristlewing may ungroup and turn on them. Draco is much smaller and weaker than the Bristlewing itself, and makes for easy prey, especially once exhausted.

These partnerships are not to be mistaken as Flamekin bonds, as the Bristlewing’s hostile nature makes it incompatible with long-term, interspecies relationships. The Bristlewing and Dracovipers must part ways as soon as the Dominus has fallen. Bristlewing do not form Flamekin bonds.

Courting and Nesting

When Spring hits the highest peaks of Volcano Islands / Burned Forest, courtship becomes a gruesome, competitive display of slaughter and nest design rather than gentle mating calls. To win a mate, a male must transform his nest into a macabre trophy gallery, requiring a bare minimum of either three Dracoviper or Drakara bones or a single Dominus bone just to be considered. Males place these nests exclusively to attract attention from potential mates. Females show a massive preference for suitors sporting Dominus remains, as harboring the titan’s bones proves a male is a calculating and effective predator.

The male who meticulously arranges the highest volume of bones around his territory is crowned the alpha of the pair, forming a lasting bond that may eventually grow into a family pack of their own. These relationships persist as long as mates stay present in each other’s lives. Prolonged absences may weaken the bond over time and cause it to fail, leaving the remaining mate to seek out a stronger partnership. The only unconditional bonds Bristlewing share are with their relatives. (Mothers, fathers, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and offspring. Cousins may also group.)

In the wake of the Spring selection, the newly bonded Bristlewings transition from decorators to conquerors, organizing their families into superior warring parties to secure their breeding grounds. Their destination is Wind Tunnels / Red Island, where they systematically purge the area of any Dominus or Dracoviper populations that refuse to flee. In a display of territorial dominance, the Bristlewings seize these established nesting sites, with females constructing their own nests in immediate proximity to the remains of the former occupants’ homes to enhance their status. This takeover is not merely for shelter but a strategic maneuver to provide a high-elevation stronghold where their young can begin their life in a state of constant, aggressive competition.

Offspring Behavior

The stay in Wind Tunnels/ Red Island is a frantic period of growth, with hatchlings spending the season gorging on local prey to build the massive muscle and stamina required for the inevitable Great Migration. By the time they reach the adolescent stage, the young Bristlewings leave the nesting grounds in loose groups of their own, beginning the migration without the protection of their parents.

The journey across the continent is a relentless test of stamina, navigation, and survival. Many never complete the migration, often being claimed by exhaustion, predators, or the elements. Those that endure the migration eventually reunite with their families at Volcano Islands/ Burned Forest, establishing the multi-generational packs that roam their ancestral home.

Mandatory Traits

Air Superiority

The skies belong to one wyvern, and the Bristlewing tolerates no competition for aerial supremacy. If a Bristlewing is airborne, any other flying creature within its line of sight must immediately land or flee the airspace. If the intruder refuses to yield and remains in flight, the Bristlewing is mechanically required to engage them with lethal intent. The only exception to this absolute rule is if the Bristlewing is drastically outnumbered by a hostile flight of Dominus.

Bristlewing will dive bomb or barrel-roll opposing fliers out of the sky, pursuing them to the ground. Fights will not ensue as long as the flier does not attempt to fly within sight of the Bristlewing.

Bristlewing must be at 80% hunger or below to challenge other fliers in their airspace.

Volatile Sovereignty

As fiery and temperamental as the volcanic peaks it claims, a Bristlewing exists in a state of perpetual rage regarding its territory. Once a Bristlewing has claimed a nesting site, it cannot use submissive calls, retreat, or yield its ground to any threat, regardless of the opponent’s tier or numbers.

Hunting Party

Because Bristlewings view Dracovipers as lesser wyverns and inferior, expendable assets, they are strictly forbidden from sharing food with them. The Bristlewing always claims absolute priority over a carcass; if a Dracoviper attempts to eat before the Bristlewing is completely full, the Bristlewing must aggressively attack or drive them away.

The Great Sieve

Nesting in the high-elevation Wind Tunnels / Red Island is a frantic, ruthless filter for the species. Parents will protect and gorge their hatchlings until they reach adolescent age, but the moment the season changes and the migration back to Volcano Islands / Burned Forest begins, the rules change drastically. Adults depart first, leaving their offspring behind to continue feeding around the nesting grounds until they are strong enough to undertake the journey themselves.

Juveniles and adolescents gather into loose groups before beginning the Great Migration to their ancestral home. The journey is perilous, claiming many young to predators, exhaustion, and the unforgiving landscape. Those that survive eventually reunite with their family packs upon reaching Volcano Islands/ Burned Forest; those that abandon the migration or fail to complete the journey are considered outcasts and are no longer welcomed back into the group.

Juveniles and adolescents that perish during the Great Migration are considered outcasts. Upon respawning, they may not rejoin or be accepted back into their original family pack.

Optional Traits

Scorched Earth

To maintain its massive internal body temperature and showcase its dominant presence, a Bristlewing will often scorch the ground with its flame before sitting or sleeping. This ritual serves a dual purpose: it creates a warm, basalt-like heat bed for the heavy wyvern, and acts as a blatant, terrifying flex of power to unnerve any bystanders in the immediate area.

No Retreat, No Mercy

Cowardice is a death sentence within a Bristlewing flight. If an individual fails to give their absolute all during a territorial defense, or is witnessed fleeing from a fight in a display of self-preservation, they may face severe consequences. Upon returning, the family will ruthlessly exile the coward. The sole exception to this brutal law is a coordinated, collective retreat: if an overwhelming force threatens the survival of the entire pack, and the group unanimously agrees to pull back, they may retreat together without shame.

The Warming Flame

Fire is the ultimate language of the Bristlewing, used within the species for everything from comfort to harsh discipline. Individuals will frequently shoot controlled bursts of flame at one another, whether it is to warm up a freezing ally, express a rough sign of endearing affection to a mate, or physically correct the behavior of an unruly sub-adult. While these blasts are meant to instruct or bond rather than murder, a stubborn sub-adult who refuses to learn their lesson may face relentless follow-on scorching, which can absolutely result in accidental death if the behavior is not corrected.

Strength in Numbers

During the nesting season at Wind Tunnels / Red Island, unrelated family packs temporarily tolerate each other for the sake of securing the breeding grounds. Up to 2 Bristlewing families may work together to force out the resident dragon or dragons occupying the location they wish to claim as a nesting site. (No more than 4 attackers, 2 from each family, may engage.) This uneasy tolerance lasts only for the duration of the nesting season. Once the Great Migration begins, unrelated family packs once again become fiercely territorial, and their aggressive nature resumes.
