Leviathan

Leviathan is a massive semi-aquatic predator shaped by the unstable forces that followed the First Spark. Its heavily built body, powerful limbs, and rows of defensive spines make it well-suited for dominating deep waterways and coastal environments. Unlike most creatures touched by the world’s corruption, the Leviathan developed powerful bioelectric adaptations, allowing it to discharge energy through its body and surrounding water. These mutations came at a cost, leaving the species heavily dependent on aquatic environments and unlike nearly anything else inhabiting Gondwa or Riparia.

Behavior
The Leviathan is a massive, spiny semi-aquatic apex predator that dominates deep waters. Its heavy claws and sharp back spines serve as both weapons and protection, while its mutated biology allows it to generate powerful bioelectric discharges capable of stunning or paralyzing nearby creatures. Leviathans are highly intolerant of creatures close to their own size and will issue two warning roars at any Tier 5 or Tier 6 creature that approaches within two body lengths. If the intruder does not leave after these warnings, the Leviathan will attack until the target retreats or dies.
Leviathans are strict loners and do not tolerate others of their own kind. They hunt primarily in the water and only venture onto land when food becomes scarce, relying on their immense weight, powerful claws, and bioelectric abilities to overwhelm prey.
Courting & Nesting
During late summer and early Autumn, adult Leviathans temporarily set aside their usual solitary aggression to court and reproduce. A male begins by identifying a female and following her from a distance for several minutes before approaching the water’s edge with a large fish or fresh piece of meat. After placing the offering, he retreats two body lengths and waits for the female to accept it. Once she takes the offering, both Leviathans exchange two broadcast roars and synchronized heart emotes to complete the pair bond. This tolerance is temporary and lasts only long enough for nesting to begin. The moment the first egg spawns, the male immediately leaves the group, gives a final goodbye broadcast, and returns to his solitary behavior in accordance with the Deadly Deadbeat trait.
Offspring behavior
Leviathan offspring are born aggressive, unruly, and highly competitive with their siblings. From a young age, they snap, shove, steal food, and crowd one another away from preferred resting spots, forcing the mother to constantly separate or reposition them around the nest. They show little concern for personal space, often climbing directly over sleeping siblings rather than walking around them. Juveniles frequently test anything within reach with their jaws, including siblings, carcasses, vegetation, and occasionally the mother herself. They are also known to drag random bones, fish, shells, and discarded body parts back to the nest, creating messy collections around their resting area. Young Leviathans are highly reactive and easily provoked, sometimes hissing at their own reflection in shallow water or ambushing siblings from reeds and vegetation for no apparent reason beyond startling them.
The female provides food and protects the nest, but her tolerance has limits. Young that repeatedly bite, block, or interfere with her feeding are aggressively corrected and driven several body lengths away before being allowed to return. These corrections can be violent enough that many Leviathans carry scars from a young age, left by their mother’s claws, jaws, or spines. If one continues to excessively harass her despite these corrections, she may cull and consume it. Her maternal instincts can also give way to hunger; if she reaches 10% hunger or lower, she may kill and eat one of her offspring as an emergency food source.
Anything that comes within two Leviathan body lengths of the nest is treated as a potential threat. The female will warn the intruder and position herself between it and the nest, but she does not immediately pursue anything that passes nearby. If the creature ignores her warnings, continues approaching, or makes an aggressive move toward the nest or offspring, she will attack until it retreats beyond the nesting area.
As they mature, the juveniles become increasingly territorial toward one another. By adolescence, siblings begin spending more time apart around the surrounding water and may engage in short dominance scuffles over food, basking areas, or access to their mother. Once they reach sub-adulthood, the family bond rapidly deteriorates, and the young are driven away to live independently.
Adoption
In the spring, female Leviathans develop a strong nesting instinct. A female without hatched spawns of her own may adopt up to two hatchling or juvenile Leviathans, accepting and caring for them as her own. That tolerance ends once she has offspring of her own. Any unfamiliar hatchling or juvenile is recognized as unrelated and treated as an intruder, with the female attempting to kill and consume it if it approaches. Male Leviathans do not adopt and will eat any hatchling that approaches.
Mandatory Traits
Solitary Mutant
Leviathans do not tolerate other adult Leviathans and treat them as direct rivals for food and space. If another Leviathan enters their line of sight, they will aggressively chase it away regardless of hunger level. The pursuit continues until the rival is killed or leaves line of sight, but cannot continue into another POI. Fighting other Leviathans is forbidden during nesting season.
Deadly Deadbeat
When nesting begins, the male assists the female in gathering materials and selecting a suitable site. The pair must remain grouped while preparing the nest and waiting for the eggs to spawn. As soon as the first egg appears, the male immediately leaves the group and abandons the nesting area, taking no part in raising or protecting the offspring.
Anchor
Leviathans remain closely tied to water and cannot travel indefinitely across dry land. When pursuing prey away from the shoreline, they must abandon the hunt once they have traveled farther than one full stamina bar from the water’s edge. While it is raining, the Leviathan may remain on land longer and venture farther inland than usual, including to search for another water source. All normal hunting and combat rules still apply while on land, regardless of weather.
Spite of The Aberration
The Leviathan harbors a deep, instinctual hatred for Spinosaurus, viewing the unblemished apex as a direct insult to its own mutated existence. The moment a Spinosaurus enters the Leviathan’s line of sight, there are no warnings before combat begins. The fight ends only once the Spinosaurus is killed or is no longer within sight of the Leviathan. Hunger level does not matter.
Drowned Larder
Once a Leviathan has secured a carcass, whether through combat or by contesting it, it becomes highly possessive of the kill and remains near it until the carcass is completely consumed or disappears. Any non-grouped creature that comes within two body lengths is given two warning calls to leave. If it remains or attempts to feed from the carcass, the Leviathan attacks immediately.
Flamekins currently grouped with the Leviathan can feed from the carcass, but the Leviathan always has feeding priority. Any Flamekin that prevents the Leviathan from feeding is killed without hesitation.
Optional Traits
Tithe of the Deep
Leviathans allow Flamekins into their group under a strict arrangement. To earn the Leviathan’s goodwill, a Flamekin must bring it meat or fish. In exchange, the Leviathan protects the Flamekin from other large predators while it remains nearby. Eligible Flamekins must be semi-aquatic, including semi-aquatic fliers that are Tier 2 or lower, and each adult Leviathan may have a maximum of two Flamekins. Flamekins can initiate hunts and assist in combat, though they bear the full risk of dying in battle. If a Flamekin dies, the Leviathan does not stop or retreat from the fight because of its death. A female Leviathan may have Flamekins while nesting, but not during courting. A Leviathan with any Flamekins cannot also have a Hibber.
Soothing Symbiosis
Something about the Hibber’s presence calms the Leviathan’s overactive metabolism, lowering its hunger drain and allowing it to go longer between meals. Because of this, Leviathans tolerate a Hibber remaining nearby and recognize it as a valuable companion. A female Leviathan may have a Hibber while nesting, but not during courting. A Hibber is not considered a Flamekin, and a Leviathan with a Hibber cannot also have Flamekins.
