Velocciraptor

Velociraptor was a small dromaeosaurid dinosaur that lived in the late Cretaceous period, from about 71 to 75 million years ago. It was related to Achillobater and Deinonychus; however, it was closer in size to a turkey rather than to its cousins. It was a small, feathered, bipedal predator with the distinctive raptor sickle claw on its second toe. They lived in a semi-arid climate in what is now Mongolia and northern China, and likely fed on small prey and carcasses.

Behavior

Velocciraptor is a highly intelligent and cunning predator. Their agility allows them to scale mountains and cliffsides in order to spot and run down prey. They are quick enough to catch almost anything, and they prefer small prey that don’t pose a threat. They are strategic hunters known to cooperate in groups to take down larger prey. Velocciraptor has no fear, nor trepidation, and its coordinated groups strike fear into the hearts of slow-moving carnivores and herbivores alike.

Mandatory Traits

Family Matters

Velocciprators nest in small colonies in the large rock formations and cliff ledges of their preferred territory. The individuals in these colonies work together to build their nests and take turns caring for their young, as well as hunting. They teach their young what to eat by bringing meat from their preferred prey, and adolescents learn to hunt by observing the adults. Males primarily patrol the territory in groups, making sure to push out any unwanted competitors, like the Deinonychus or Utahraptor. Velocciraptor colonies may contain up to 10 adults, and females may hatch 3 eggs each Spring. Colonies will disperse in the fall and winter, although Velocciraptor may stay in smaller family units or pairs. They will always return to the nesting grounds in the spring.

Pick a Party

Juvenile Velociraptor are curious and playful, enjoying the company of their siblings and the comfort of the colony. They hone their hunting skills with play, sneaking up and pouncing on their siblings as well as chasing each other around the nesting grounds. They become far more independent and bold in adolescence, as the fear of the world around them dissipates. Adolescent males tend to form patrol packs, consisting of 5 individuals, all of which will engage with rivals and drive off large carnivores from their territory.

Adolescents will also start to follow hunting parties of 5 individuals, all 5 of which work together to hunt large prey.

Lone Ranger

Solo or orphaned Velocciraptor have a very different survival strategy than those in a pack. They stay low to the ground and make quick and quiet movements throughout their habitats. They only hunt tier 1 prey and critters; anything larger and they risk serious injury. Rarely, they may seek out large carnivores to form a Flamekin bond. If Velociraptors hatch in an abandoned nest alongside siblings, they may form an inseparable Flamekin bond. Should that sibling perish or vanish, the survivor becomes deeply withdrawn, showing extreme hesitation toward any new social interaction.

Optional Traits

King of Scraps

In times of scarcity, Velocciraptor packs have no qualms about feeding from carcasses and eating bones. They will happily eat the leftovers of kills from large carnivores, and some packs will even challenge for a carcass. Velocciraptor must have a full hunting party of 6, with 4 on offense to contest a corpse. The other 2 Velocciraptor may only replace offensive members whose stamina has completely depleted.

Rapid Risk Takers

Being one of the fastest land animals on the continent makes for a very curious Velocciraptor. Having no fear of apex carnivores or herbivores, they run right through high-traffic migration areas and nesting grounds. They enjoy finding perches on tall rock formations that give them a good view of the activities of the apexes they wish to observe. Unlike their cousin, Deinonychus, they have little regard for who may or may not tolerate their antics. They find great amusement in teasing large dinosaurs by nipping and barking until they give chase. Futile are their efforts, as Velocciraptor will continue to taunt until it gets bored or becomes low on stamina (no longer than three minutes).

Velocci See, Velocci Do

Velocciraptor imprint on their parents immediately upon hatching. In rare cases, such as when they hatch from an abandoned nest or are orphaned at the hatchling stage, they may imprint on whichever carnivore tolerates them first. This becomes a strong Flamekin bond. In such a case where a Velocciraptor imprints on semi-aquatic carnivores, they will develop a particular fondness for water and can be seen splashing in tide pools and riverbanks.
